Your Guide to the Best Markets Around Australia

When it comes to markets, we're pretty blessed here in Australia. Fresh, locally-grown produce, world-class arts and crafts, creative gifts and souvenirs... you name it, our markets have got it in spades. And while they're all worth a visit, we reckon these ones are extra special.

1. The Rocks Markets (Sydney, NSW)

Every Saturday and Sunday 10am – 5pm

Located (unsurprisingly) in Sydney's historic Rocks precinct, here you'll find 200 stalls lining George Street, Playfair Street, and Jack Mundey Place offering everything from handmade jewellery to gourmet treats. And be sure to check out the Friday Foodie Markets every Friday from 9am till 3pm. Trust us, your taste buds will thank you!

2. Queen Victoria Market (Melbourne, VIC)

Every Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday

This iconic market has been running since 1878 and has an incredibly rich history - it was once even the site of a cemetery! But fear not, nowadays it's the city's hub of all things fresh fruit, veg, and meat, plus locally-designed clothing, homewares, and other artisan goods. Oh, and if you're around, don't forget to catch the Winter Night Markets, held every Wednesday night from June to August.

3. The Original Eumundi Markets (Eumundi, QLD)

Every Wednesday 8am - 1:30pm and Saturday 7am - 2pm

A trip to the Sunshine Coast isn't complete without a shopping sesh at the beloved Eumundi Markets. Just a 20-minute drive from Noosa, you'll find a showcase of the best food, art, and fashion that Queensland has to offer. You can even catch performances from great local musicians and dancers every Saturday. What more could you want?

4. Salamanca Market (Hobart, TAS)

Every Saturday 8:30am - 3pm

This Hobart institution was first opened in the 1970s as a summer market but proved so popular that it quickly became an all-year operation. Today, it's Tasmania's most popular tourist attraction, with 300 stalls and up to 40,000 visitors every Saturday. And with some of the state's best produce on offer (think cheese, wine, and spirits) plus clothing, jewellery, and more, it's not hard to see why.

5. Old Bus Depot Markets (Canberra, ACT)

Every Sunday 10am - 4pm

You can try, but you won't find a better way to spend your Sunday in Canberra than at the Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston. Whether you're a foodie, fashionista, lover of bling, or admirer of the arts, there's something for you. Even better? You can enjoy performances from some of Canberra's most exciting up-and-coming musicians while you shop and eat.

6. Adelaide Central Market (Adelaide, SA)

Every Tuesday to Saturday

Locals and tourists alike simply adore Adelaide Central Market, the city's fresh food hub and one of the country's oldest markets, dating back to 1869. Not only can you sample some of South Australia's finest produce, but being Adelaide, you've also got access to some of the best wine in the world (in our humble opinion). Yes, please!

7. Fremantle Markets (Fremantle, WA)

Every Friday 9am - 8pm and Saturday to Sunday 9am - 6pm

Since 1897, Fremantle Markets has been providing Western Australians with locally-grown fruit and veg, delicious sweets and treats, plus tons of art, fashion, and unique gifts. We recommend grabbing a feed in The Yard, checking out the market's famous buskers, admiring the incredible Federation architecture, and soaking up the vibrant, bustling atmosphere.

8. Mindil Beach Sunset Markets (Darwin, NT)

Every Thursday and Sunday 4pm - 9pm during the dry season (May to October)

We reckon there's no better way to top off a day in beautiful Darwin than with a stroll along the Mindil Beach Markets, where you'll find over 300 stalls. There's plenty of delicious local food and drink, aboriginal art, clothing, jewellery, gifts and more, but the best part is without a doubt the stunning sunsets. Make sure you bring a camera!
