What is a floatation tank?

A floatation tank is a capsule in the form of a large bathtub with a closeable lid. The idea is to fit an individual inside the capsule comfortably, along with the ability to open and close the lid as they please.Inside the tank is about 500kg of super-saturated Epsom salt solution, which works out to be around 25cm deep. The idea behind this is to create a buoyancy effect similar to that of the Dead Sea, which allows you to float effortlessly (ie with no kicking or waving of arms) at the top of the water. This glorious sensation makes you feel weightless, and once you’re properly settled in, it’ll actually feel more like you’re floating in air because you won’t be able to tell which parts of your body are in the water and which aren’t.

What happens inside the tank?

Once you’re inside the tank and settled into the water, the lights will be switched off and it’ll just be you and your thoughts. Since your body will feel completely weightless, you’ll feel every muscle in your body to the point where you’ll no longer even feel your physical being. You won’t hear outside noises - it’ll be completely dark and quiet.

So, why is it good for you?

This state of complete relaxation has been found to have a hugely positive impact on your mood. As well as increasing your levels of dopamine and endorphins, you’ll also reach a deep meditative state during your session. Research has shown that the amygdala - the brain’s centre for emotions, emotional behaviour and motivation - can almost shut off, which will remove any strings of anxiety floating around your brain.
