Vegetarians, look away now. There’s nothing quite like the delectable combination of juicy chicken covered in crispy skin, tossed with the right mix of spices. Now we’ve sparked your appetite, might we suggest working your way down this list of some of Sydney’s best fried chicken.

1. Belle’s Hot Chicken

First opening in Melbourne, this Nashville-inspired fried chicken was one of the first outlets to open in Barangaroo – and remains one it’s most popular. With a line out the door most lunchtimes, diners have the choice of chicken cuts, sides and sauces. Be warned, choose heat level “Really F**kin Hot” with caution!

2. Butter

Oozing typical Surry Hills “cool”, Butter offers the unusual fusion of fried chicken, sneakers and champagne… and we’re definitely not complaining. Choose your chicken heat (“naked” to “hot AF”) and pair with sides like Collard Greens and Pickled Cucumber.

3. Thirsty Bird

Southern fried chicken and waffle fries, is there a better combo in this life? This Potts Point institution does it as good as anyone, without the fancy flourishes.

4. Mary’s

Known around these parts as one of the best burgers you will ever eat, their fried chicken options are not to be overlooked. Tuck into either a half or whole bird, wash it down with a Young Henry’s and soak in the grungy-but-cool rock’n’roll vibe you can find only in Newtown.

5. Basax Korean Chicken and Dining

No one does fried chicken quite like the Koreans, and Basax are no exception. Don’t miss their signature  “special spicy sauce” in the heart of Chinatown.

6. Hot Star Chicken

This hole-in-the-wall late night hot spot serves up some of the best Taiwanese fried chicken you may ever come across. With stores dotted around the country, munch into their fresh, golden chicken served larger than the size of a palm. Delicious.

8. Red Pepper Bistro, Strathfield

Another hole-in-the-world type joint that packs an unexpected flavour punch, locals know this is the place to go for some of Sydney’s best Korean fried chicken.

Find them inside Strathfield Sports Club, about 15km to the west of Sydney’s CBD.
