When the mercury plummets, it can be tempting to embrace your inner hermit and never leave the house. But why should you miss out on all the fun simply because of a little chilliness? To help you avoid stir-craziness and warm those spirits (even when it’s freezing outside!) we’ve tracked down seven delightfully cosy bars around the country.
Brisbane: Proud Henry
Tucked behind an unassuming blue facade on Wickham St lies the 1920s-inspired wine and gin bar, Proud Henry. Named the 2019 Reader’s Choice Wine Bar of the Year by AGFG, this cosy bar boasts one of the city’s coolest courtyards. It also happens to be home to over 250 artisan gins and a beaut selection of boutique wines, not to mention some of the best grazing boards we’ve ever seen.
Keen? Pop over to Scoopon now to nab a wine tasting and cheese or charcuterie board at Proud Henrys for just $45 for two. Gin lover? Switch to a gin tasting for an extra $4.
Gold Coast: The Roosevelt Lounge
Intimate, elegant and downright sexy, The Roosevelt Lounge brings a little Great Gatsby glamour to Broadbeach. From the art deco-style carpet to the pressed-metal ceiling, this place is dripping in luxury from top to bottom. But that doesn’t stop it from also being one of the cosiest bars on the GC. Velvet chairs, leather chesterfields and soul-warming bespoke cocktails… we’re sold.
Sydney: The Duke of Clarence
There’s just something about period bars that makes them so damn cosy, and The Duke of Clarence is no exception. Tucked away on Clarence St in the CBD, this 19th century-inspired London tavern really does feel like a slice of old-world England. Whether you’re sipping Pimms by the fire in the library or knocking back a pint or two at the imposing wooden bar, you won’t want to leave.
Canberra: Bar Rochford
When it comes to cosy bars, it’s hard to beat Canberra’s Bar Rochford. Named Australia’s Best Bar in the 2018 Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide Awards, this London Circuit hotspot proves concrete floors, big, bright windows and industrial-style digs can be just as cosy as lounges and candlelight. Oh, and the fireplace doesn’t hurt, either!
Melbourne: Elements Bar
Three words: Mars bar cocktail. Just one of the many libationary delights on offer at Melbourne Marriott’s Elements Bar in the heart of the CBD. Throw in some seriously fancy bar snacks (scallop ceviche, 18-hour pork belly, crispy duck) and an uber-elegant fireplace and you’re set for one cosy night.
Adelaide: Bank St Social
You can’t get much cosier than an underground bar, and Adelaide’s Bank St Social is undoubtedly the coolest in the city. With its brick walls, wooden beams, dim lighting and curved booths, this beloved watering hole really comes into its own when winter rolls around. Expect fresh, stone-cooked pizza that heroes fresh, local ingredients, a mammoth range of whisky, craft beer, wine and all-round good vibes.
Perth: The Cabin
It’s called The Cabin, so you just know it’s going to be cosy. Small, intimate and rustic, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were out in the country and not smack-bang in the heart of Perth. Grab some mates, order some cocktails (the lemon jaffa is to die for) and tasty international share plates (tacos, falafels and bao, oh my!) and pull up a chair by the fire. You’ll be feeling toasty in no time!
