Pop the champers and don the fascinator – spring racing season is finally here, and with it, a slew of new fashion trends to try out on the field.
With just a couple of short weeks between now and the race that stops the nation, it’s time to start asking that all-important question: what to wear?
Luckily for you, we’ve taken the stress out of outfit planning and sussed out eight of the hottest trends hitting the track this year. Giddy up!
Black and white aren’t just for Derby Day! You can expect to see lots of monochrome throughout the season, with bold prints (polka dots are making a real comeback) and little pops of colour to add a little excitement to your look. Check out Erin Holland’s 2016 Derby Day outfit for some inspo – it may have been two years ago, but her look would be just as on-point at this year’s event.
2. Longer Hemlines
This year, we’re seeing a return to classic silhouettes and hemlines past the knee, so leave the mini dress at home and opt for a retro-inspired tea dress, show off your curves with a fitted, figure-hugging frock, or offer a cheeky glimpse of skin with a thigh split, like Bachie winner Anna Heinrich.
3. Straw Hats
Swap the mesh and feathers for a classic straw boater or sun hat. And since the unofficial Melbourne Cup fashion motto is ‘go hard or go home’, the bigger the brim, the better. Take Brooke Hogan’s 2017 Derby Day look for instance. Her gorgeous, dramatic hat puts traditional fascinators to shame.
Lace, frills, tiers, bows, you name it. Anything that adds depth to your dress is a step in the right direction, especially on Oaks Day (a.k.a. Ladies’ Day), when it’s all about amping up the femininity. We can’t get enough of this girly tiered Zimmerman frock!
5. Pared-Back Makeup
This year, smokey eyes and dark lips are out and earthy tones are in. Keep in mind, race days are long, and the bolder your beauty look is, the harder it is to maintain. Stick to neutral shadows and lip shades that mimic your natural colour, like Elyse Knowles’ fresh-faced look.

Bring a little androgynous flair to the field with a classy, form-fitting pantsuit. Go classic with black or white, or inject a little fun into your look with eye-catching patterns and bold colours. Take your style cues from Cara Delevigne’s uber-cool royal wedding outfit.
7. Metallic Headpieces
It’s time to make like the queen you are and pop on a crown! A chunky, metallic headpiece is the perfect way to give a flirty, feminine outfit a bit of edgy glamour. We love this stunning piece by Viktoria Novak.

8. Statement Jewellery
Just because you’ve got an attention-grabbing fascinator, it doesn’t mean you have to forego big earrings and necklaces. After all, when it comes to the races, ‘less is more’ doesn’t apply. Just ensure it’s all balanced, like Rozalia Russian’s understated headpiece and chunky earrings.
Now that you’ve got your outfit sorted, it’s time for a pre-races pamper session! For a chic hair makeover, on-point brows and lashes, an indulgent mani-pedi or a rejuvenating facial, hit up Scoopon for all the hottest beauty and wellness deals in your area.
