If there’s one thing we love at Scoopon, it’s food. The tastes, the smells, the experiences – not to mention the delightful places it can take us. And of course, sharing it with someone we love… whether that be a significant other, a friend or family member. So with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we went exploring to discover where in the world the best foods to share can be found, combining our two biggest love affairs – travel and food – into one.
Chocolate-Covered Strawberries – Malta
Aside from being decadently yummy, chocolate-covered strawberries contain two romantic boosters. Firstly, the chocolate encourages your brain to produce more serotonin, which helps to keep your mood high. And then the strawberry itself, known as a symbol for Venus, is packed with Vitamin C to keep your blood flowing. So where can you find great strawberries? Out in the Mediterranean on the little island nation of Malta, strawberries grow freely in the fields of Mgarr – and you’ll know you’re close by with the overpowering sweet smell of this delicious fruit.
Chilli Peppers – Mexico
If you’re looking to add some spice to your Valentine’s Day, you can’t go wrong with chillies… containing endorphins to boost your mood and energy, chillies warm up the body from the inside out – so get ready for things to get hot! And for the best chilli-infused dishes, where else to go but sunny Mexico? Home to spicy dishes like burritos, fajitas and tacos, there are definitely load of ways to get your love (and your tongue) burning.
Honey – Spain
Ever wondered where the term “honeymoon” came from? Well, turns out it comes from mead, an alcoholic drink brewed from honey, and traditionally given to a new bride and groom as a gift for its sweetness. For some of the world’s best quality honey, a trip to Galicia, Spain is in order – because as well as tapas and sangria, the Spaniards are also renowned for their beekeeping skills!
Pomegranate – Turkey
Some people say the forbidden fruit that Eve broke the rules to eat in the Garden of Eden was not in fact an apple, but a pomegranate, bursting with sweet ruby red seeds. And actually, there’s also a myth that the first pomegranate tree was planted by Goddess of Love, Aphrodite herself! Myths aside, studies have shown that pomegranates are full of antioxidants which increase blood flow and testosterone – so either way, they’re known for stimulating arousal. Found in mostly warm climates, you’ll find some of the world’s best pomegranates in Istanbul, Turkey – here, you can drink the juice fresh, in place of your regular OJ!
Fondue – Switzerland
You can’t really get more romantic than fondue! This Swiss dish originating from the 18th century comes from the French word for “melt”. Back in the day, it was a dish developed for families who had limited access to fresh food over the winter, so they could dip their stale bread into melted cheese without it going bad. Nowadays, fondue is not only delicious, but a super romantic dining experience to be shared between two – especially in the beautiful city of Geneva – and it’s bound to make hearts “melt”!
Oysters – Australia
Love them or hate them, oysters are one of the most famous aphrodisiacs around. In fact, Casanova himself is said to have eaten 50 oysters for breakfast on the daily, and we all know how well his love life turned out! Research shows that oysters are full of zinc, which increases sperm and testosterone production, which in turn increases libido… and many people around the world swear by them. Globally, there are many types of oysters to be found, but one of the best is the Sydney Rock Oyster, found right here in Australia – so you don’t have to travel far to feel the effect!
Goji Berries – China
In the last few years, it’s become trendy on the food scene to add these little red berries to salads, cereals and smoothies. But over in China, these nutrition-rich fruits have been used for years. Known as “happy berries” to the Chinese, goji berries have been proven to be an aphrodisiac – so it’s no wonder how they got their name! Head to the goji fields in Zhongning County, West China, to get the most authentic flavours (and kick) out of these intriguing little berries.
